Turns out that some people are never quite satisfied. So let me get this straight – the grass is always greener if you’re in another Galaxy? 😊 If I’m mocking NASA’s new Webb Telescope Project it’s all in jest. I have no issue myself with sending probes into outer space to travel further than the last one, and the one before that. Really no issue because that’s what probes are designed to do, “out-probe” each other, or something like that. And, it’s what physicists and astronomers and engineers are trained to do and in so doing, many times, they must defy popular opinion to make important discoveries.
NASA’s Webb Telescope will be launched soon, per a “60 Minutes” broadcast this satellite will travel way past where man and machine have ever gone before. The aim is to study the early beginnings of the Universe at a distance of approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. Whereby this probe will be receiving computer commands/signals from us “lowly” Earthlings… how that works is way over my head, I’m still trying to figure out how to navigate an Amazon Firestick to watch my YouTube TV when both mechanisms are in the same room! 😊
I did find this story quite amusing though when one of the astronomers interviewed for 60 Minutes tonight, she being one of a select few scientists who will earn “hours of time” with the Webb Telescope as it’s floating around space, she summed up nicely what is driving our fascination with space travel – it’s a human condition known as “Cosmic Loneliness”. I thought that was quite apropos… so the real reason we’ve spent $10 billion and a decade now developing this new telescope is just to see if we’re floating around in space alone? You have to love the honesty in that statement. Don’t get me wrong, I’m for space travel and just to sum up my opinion on the matter – if exploring space can get us to a closer understanding of the Universe in which we live, then for me, that will undoubtedly result in a closer relationship with God, who invented it in the first place! 😉
What if it doesn’t work right when it gets there like Hubble? Hope they got a Triple A card for a toe. You’d think for 10 Billion it would come with a warranty.
I agree, right? I was reading an article before I ran up on this one it was about the rover we launched in 2008 to land on Mars to “rove around” because that’s what rovers do, they rove around. Turns out that some months later and after sending photos back to NASA, a scientist controlling it from Earth got it stuck in the sand on the red planet and they never could get it mobile again. So all it does now for years is sit there and twirl around to show us photos of it’s nearby area. So much for radio operated electric cars. Oops! I hope no one invested in Tesla or Apple car is listening. 🙂
