Most Roads Lead to Gray
You tell me you’re going to pay a hefty sum, like $85k, in some cases more than $200k on a luxury automobile and choose Primer Grey for the color – have you lost your mind?! The answer is “maybe”, or “maybe not”. There sure are a ton of automobiles, some very expensive cars rolling around in the North DFW area that, wait for it – are Primer Grey! There’s never been a time before in my history on this planet when Primer Grey took off as a chosen car color, never! So this is a fairly new trend and has some of us talking but is it really something to worry about, or not? I’d like to talk about this trend because it’s a strange phenomenon indeed!
Meanwhile…
More car makers are using/offering extremely muted tones on their models. I was looking at maybe trading in my BMW for their X5, a mid-sized SUV, that would easily hold my golfclubs and maybe more stuff in the back. It only comes in 5 colors, Black, White, Gray, another Gray, and a Greenish Gray. The greenish color looks like they took primer gray and added a little bit of forest green to it and wa-la, or what-the-f? Something like that. Who are these car makers listening to, who is advising them eliminate all colors and go white, black and mixtures of white and black? These autos are the second or third most expensive cash outlay a family will have and we could really use more choices I believe.
Now, I Can Say With Confidence
When I was growing up Primer Gray colored automobiles did exist but what happened in about 100% of the cases these were cars that had received body work from a collision or a re-make with new parts and when they rolled off the lot new they were never Primer Gray. The car was re-primed with a dull gray but never actually repainted because having an automobile repainted required a couple of things from the owner – one was that he/she would be walking for the time until a new finish was placed and sealed and two, the biggest impediment to moving past that ugly gray primer was the cost of having a new professional finish placed on an old beat-up automobile. An automobile that wasn’t even worth the cost of a professional paint job, get it? So these owners and their autos tended to stay Primer Gray, all the way to the junk yard. Thus, very few of these autos back in the day ever saw light past their primer stage. But that’s no longer the case today, people with [I guess] more money than brains are actually ordering new cars to look as fugly as possible. That’s the trend and maybe, just maybe there’s a reason for this. Think about it, those people that are just fine with ramming their shopping carts into the side of our cars at the grocery store or backing into us at the golf course and failing to leave a note(?), are they more likely to ram a beautiful apple red sportscar or a primer grey SUV? Placing a dent into which one of these will give them more pleasure? Think about it because these are the jackasses that can’t afford a nice ride so they have no issue with ruining someone else’s investment. My answer is they’re less likely to take their hatred out for wealthy people on a Primer Gray SUV, even if it’s brand new. So therein lies one advantage to driving a fugly looking Primer Gray automobile.
My Feeling Guilt Theory
Here’s one theory, are drivers with tons of money in the bank purposely playing down their wealth by ordering new cars in Primer Gray? I think that’s one rabbit hole to go down. Many people with money in this country [and in Western Europe] are feeling guilty now for having wealth? That has to be it, that has to be what is going on. It’s a way of saying, “Let’s play down our wealth and we’ll still get to experience a great ride in comfort but it’ll be way less obvious when we select Primer Gray as the color of our new car. This way we won’t spark jealousy and upset any of our neighbors or fellow citizens. Just play it down. If people don’t know we’re wealthy, we’ll fit in better and they won’t alienate us because we won’t be “different”.” What an totally asinine way of going through life!
Live Your Life and Be Grateful
I’m never for anyone boasting about their successes, when it’s best to just live your life and don’t compare yourself to someone, anyone else. At the same time you are called to live your life the best as you can without harming others. God has no issues with people “earning” money and being successful just as he has no issues with people who are poor with fewer opportunities, it simply doesn’t matter. I’m not aware of any drivers licenses being issued in Heaven, yet anyway. [However, there is a place in scripture that warns about comparing ourselves to others. You can look that up]. Each of us should live our [unique] lives without regard to keeping up with those who are above or below us, economically speaking. That’s pretty much what we are called to do. No one on this planet is going to take anything with them when they die, not even their brand new Primer Grey Porsche Carrera! So live your own life, if you happen to find yourself wealthy one day you owe no one an apology for that. I’ve lived long enough now to know that one key to happiness is to always be grateful for what I have and what I don’t have.
