Dallas Cowboys & my WHYDFML Index

Dallas Cowboys & my WHYDFML Index

Statistics lie, I know because I earned an undergraduate degree in the subject. 🙂 If all you’re operating on to run a football team is “statistics” then you’re missing half the information. You think the Dallas Cowboys might be missing some information [on how to to win] these days? Remember that both the Buffalo Bills and the Minnesota Vikings went to the Super Bowl four times in the past [on statistics only] and lost every time! So now I’m thinking maybe “Man Cannot Live” on statistics alone?

I think the problem with the Dallas Cowboys is just in getting invited to a Super Bowl [in uniform]. Either they didn’t get the email, or they keep missing that phone call, oh how the Cowboy fans wish it were so. The front office of the Dallas Cowboys have failed to get their team to the big dance, it’s true but look at the positive side, it’s only been what, 27 NFL seasons in a row now? C’mon Man! Still, over all those years team personnel has changed – we’ve seen changes to Head Coaches, starting quarterbacks and running backs and lineman and on and on; still one thing remained the same, owner Jerry Jones insisted on keeping his dual title of Owner and General Manager. After 27 consecutive failing seasons at least no one can ever accuse Jerry’s Front Office of “inconsistency”?

My sympathy goes to the fans that purchased Cowboy logo items and forked out 100’s of $1,000’s of dollars to purchase “seat licenses” in Jerry World. This has to be included in the top 10 of worst investment ideas over the course of a century! Cowboy fans still have to purchase season tickets on top of all that, that senseless concept of a “seat license” doesn’t even get you into a seat yet, think about that. How does this make any sense? It doesn’t, it’s just plain stupid for any fan to put up with this plus spend $100 just to park. Forest Gump had a name for this type thing – he called this condition “stupid as stupid gets”. 🙂

This subject of losers losing is a deep one, certainly deeper than Zeke Elliott can penetrate an opposing offensive line these days. Instead, if I were with the Dallas Cowboy organization I would employ what I call the “What Have You Done for Me Lately” index [or WHYDFML], and toss out all those other indices they’ve been using; because I’m sorry to say but all those other stats just aren’t getting this team to the promised land. And I fear that some current Cowboy players wouldn’t make it through my WHYDFML criteria. Now for Dallas, a new 2023 NFL Season lurks just around the corner, it’s a familiar picture we’ve seen before; 27 different times before have we seen a hopeful Cowboys squad take the field and 27 times in a row our hopes for victory have failed which begs the question, could Jerry himself achieve a passing grade once my WHYDFML index is applied? I think I have the answer to that one!

This past season’s Cowboy standouts were Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn who is about to exit the team for greener pastures after orchestrating a much respected Defense. But for how long can Zeke Elliott hangout here making a zillion to run one yard with the football? QB starter Dak Prescott is a good person but just “okay” on the field, morphing more into mediocrity as each season passes. However, there are several standouts on Offense such as CeeDee Lamb and Pollard [broken leg] and Schultz. Still, the problem lingers over the Dallas Cowboys who haven’t won two playoff games back-to-back since winning a Super Bowl in 1996. What will change that? I ask you, could implementation of my WHYDFML index be the Game Changer that this team’s been waiting for? 😉

America’s Team? Let me challenge that with the great wisdom of my father as he laughed at that notion. As he explained it to me it made great sense back in the Oilers day. He explained how Houston was America’s Team; what you ask? He broke it down for me asking; would you want to face Dallas or Houston as your Sunday opponent? I of course would say Houston and my dad, gleeful at my intellect replied, “see son, every team knows, as well as their fans, that you’re leaving Houston with a “W”! Every fan base loves Houston, making it “America’s Team”!

The Dallas Cowboys are dead. Yes, there is a team using the name and logo, but they aren’t the iconic franchise of the 20th century any longer. Instead, they are merely another team now.

Had Jerry been the original owner, they’d be playing in a different city with a different name, just like the former Houston Oilers.

Will, totally agree! With the exception of “The Catch” (Renfro) during the Luv ya Blue days.
