My father was in the Navy during WWII, he spent the entire time on a couple aircraft carriers. He told two unusual stories, in one the ship was caught in an enormous storm in the Atlantic, all shipmates and officers were overcome with sea sickness, everyone but my father. He was the only one on that ship (200 men) that wasn’t throwing their guts up that day.The other story is one of those “what are the chances of that happening?” The carving he did of a young sailor depicted with a patch over his left eye (pictured). It was most likely his first piece of artwork ever, it is dated on the back, the year was 1934, so he was twelve years old at the time. By 1945 he was not only in the U.S. Navy but was just medically discharged. The reason? He suffered a detached retina in his left eye… he left the Naval Hospital with a patch over his left eye. Prophetic?
